Abstract
<PICT:0859876/III/1> <PICT:0859876/III/2> In an evaporator which is formed by an assemblage of heat-transferring plates P clamped between heads H but spaced apart by gaskets 9 to provide channels SF for the heating-medium alternating with channels LF for the liquid-being-evaporated, the liquid is introduced through ducts 2 and flows through two sets of registered openings 1 in the lower ends of the plates, the arrangement being such that the liquid flows up between plates P1 and P2, passes through openings 10 and 11 at the tops of plates P2 and P3, and flows down between plates P3 and P4. The concentrated liquid and its evaporated vapour flow through the outlet passage formed by the openings 3, are withdrawn through outlet 4 in one of the heads, H and are separated in separator U. Heating-medium, supplied to the apparatus through opening 6, flows to the heating channels from the passage formed by the openings 5 in the plates. Plates P1, P3 and P5 are fitted or formed with baffle-strips 12 to compel the heating-medium to follow a tortuous path. The condensate of the heatingmedium passes through openings 7 to outlet 8. The width of the downward-flow liquid channel (i.e. the size of the gap between the bounding plates) may, if desired, be made greater than that of the rising flow channel. Alternatively, three parallel downflow channels could be associated with a pair of upflow channels. Each liquid flow channel may be divided into a plurality of separate side-by-side channels by suitable gasket - strips. Evaporator units can be combined to form a multiple-effect apparatus wherein the vapour formed in one effect, after separation from the partially concentrated liquid, is supplied to the heating-channels of other effects.
