Class 130 Assemblies, each comprising two axially aligned cigarettes with an interposed double-length filter plug, are formed on extensions 7 of a table 6 and are moved, whilst retaining their elements in alignment, by a drum 2 having optionally retractable fingers 5 and by a multi-fingered reciprocatory pusher 8 into a rolling passage which is formed between the table 6 and a conveyer band 12 and in which they enwrap themselves in uniting bands cut from a cork strip C as by a rotary knife 19 coacting with grooves in a suction drum 17 and whose shaft is angled so that the knife follows the groove movement. The cigarettes A are fed to the extensions 7 direct from a hopper or from a cigarette-making machine or hopper via deflectors 1, and the plugs B are fed to the extensions 7 by grooved drums 3, 4. Guides 16 having spring steel fingers (not shown) at their downstream ends retain the assemblies in contact with the extensions 7, and side guides (not shown) bring the elements of each assembly into abutment. The assemblies may during their coaction with the pusher 8 be retained thereto by suction applied continuously or intermittently to the tips of the pusher fingers via ducts therein. The strip C is gummed by a roller 18 and the cut-off bands are fed from the drum 17 to the band 12 by strippers 22. Heating elements 23 are provided to assist gum drying. The united assemblies are received in grooves of a drum 24 on which they are severed by a knife 25 prior to delivery via a fluted drum 26 to a catcher band 27. The band 12 has side side guides (not shown). The assemblies may travel faster up to the rolling passage then they do therein. In a modification, the drum 2 is replaced by six chain conveyers in parallel having lugs replacing the fingers 5. The third Provisional Specification refers to a pusher 8 having suction means and the finger tips of which are formed to a curvature greater than that of the assemblies, and to the use of a plate-form pusher with suction apertures.
