Abstract
859,494. Nuclear reactors. GRIFFITH' A. A. Aug. 30, 1948 [Aug. 28, 1947], No. 23855/47. Class 39(4). The fuel of a nuclear reactor comprises permeable cellular bodies fabricated of metal in sheet form. In one example, Fig. 1, the fuel comprises ribbons of uranium 235, the ribbons being 5 cm. wide and 0À005 cm. thick and corrugated transversely, lengths of the corrugated ribbons being laid upon one another and brazed, welded, or sintered into a rigid block of a height of several feet. These blocks may be used in the fast reactor shown in Fig. 2, the blocks being connected together in pairs by cover plates 15 formed with eyes 16 for inserting and removing them from the reactor. Stiffening webs of corrugated sheet metal extend across the reactor, parallel to the plane of Fig. 2 to subdivide the space within the reactor and to give edge support to the blocks ; apertures 14 in the webs equalise the pressure in the reactor. The reactor is cooled by helium which passes from apertures 19 in a base flange past the outside of the reactor, through an aperture 5 in the top of the reactor to the reactor core and thence through an outlet at the bottom. The fuel elements should be designed to secure laminar flow of the gas coolant. The fuel need not be for a fast reactor and need not be of enriched uranium. The fissile material need not be the main or sole constituent of the fuel but may be contained as metal or compound within sheet metal or supported as a coating.
