Pulp from a flow-box K flows to the wirecloth A of a Fourdrinier paper-making or boardmaking machine at a position where an upper wire-cloth B passing about an imperforate roll C forms, with the wire-cloth A, a tapering gap E wherein the pulp is compressed and the lower wire A is forced downwardly to the position G (shown as a broken line). Water expressed through the upper wire B travels up a waterway J and into a trough T due to its momentum as it moves with the wire B. The lower edge of the waterway J bears against the wire B, to limit the extent of the tapering gap E. The pulp is further compressed between pairs of rolls 18, 19, and 20 and suction nozzles 24, 25 withdraw more expressed water. After leaving the wirecloth B, the web may be couched off and passed to conventional press and dryer sections, or it may remain on the wire A and more pulp may be deposited thereon from a second flow-box, such pulp being similarly formed and felted into the first web to make multiple-ply paper-board &c. Instead of, or in addition to, the waterway J there may be a suction-box for upward withdrawal of water. The front of such a box may be sloped &c. to act as does the water-way J. In another modification, side-plates are fitted at the tapering gap E. Specifications 748,597 and 780,587 are referred to.
