Abstract
858,905. Preventing incrustation and corrosion. HUGHES & CO. Ltd., F. A. Oct. 30, 1958 [Oct. 25, 1957], No. 33377/57. Class 123(1) Fouling of ships' hulls &c., by marine growths is prevented by discharging streams of air or other gas into the water so that bubbles rise in contact with the metal surface, a suspension of a finely divided metal such as cadmium, zinc, aluminium or magnesium or a metal compound such as an oxide' of copper, mercury or arsenic in an oily carrier liquid such as kerosene or light diesel oil being admixed with the air or gas. The treatment results in the destruction of the marine growths, the surface eventually becoming coated with a thin film of the suspension. The metal particles also provide cathodic protection against corrosion of the immersed structures, particularly when these are of steel. Specification 858,904 is referred to.
