Abstract
858,880. Loading bays; counterbalancing apparatus. EOL A.B. Jan. 5, 1959, No. 412/59. Classes 78 (2) and 78 (4). A platform 1 which can be swung down on to the tail of a lorry to be loaded or unloaded is counter-balanced by two devices, one of which can be held out of action. The two counterweights 9, 11 of the embodiment shown overbalance the platform 1 to the position shown but the upper counterweights 11 can be raised to a position in which it is held by a catch 35 by depressing a pedal 29; this allows the platform 1 to fall so that it engages the platform of a lorry. When the lorry is subsequently driven away, allowing the platform 1 to fall further, the members 13 carrying the counterweight 9 release the latch 33 so that the counterweight 11 assists in returning the platform 1 to the position shown. The counterweights act through a linkage 13, 23, 21 on a roller 27 engaging the underside of the platform 1. In an alternative construction (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown), the counterweight 9 is replaced by torsion bar springs and the counterweight 11 by a torsion spring. Alternatively counterbalancing can be effected hydraulically. The two counter-balancing devices may act against one another, one alone being sufficient to raise the platform provided it is not opposed by the other, which is brought into action by a pedal when the platform is to be lowered and is automatically taken out of operation when the platform is to be raised.
