Abstract
Copolymers of ethylene and a higher 1-olefin, said copolymer comprising between 1,5 and 5 mol per cent of the higher 1-olefin based on the total olefin present, are made by copolymerizing a mixture of ethylene and a higher 1-olefin containing between 2 and 15% of said higher olefin in the presence of a catalyst comprising chromium oxide containing hexavalent chromium supported on silica, alumina, thoria, zirconia or a composite thereof, at a temperature of 170 DEG to 300 DEG F. The higher 1-olefin may be propylene, butene, pentene, hexene, octene, 4-methyl-1-pentene or 5-methyl-1-hexene. The polymerization may be carried out in the gas or liquid phase or in a liquid diluent such as propane, isobutane, n-pentane, isopentane, isooctane, cyclohexane or methylcyclohexane or aromatic diluents. The polymer produced may be made into pipe, tubing or films.
