Abstract
Ethylene and a linear 1-olefin are copolymerized at a temperature between 0 and 125 DEG C. in the presence of a catalyst formed in situ and consisting of an aluminium compound of the formula R3Al or R2AlX where R is a hydrocarbon radical and X is a hydrogen atom, a vanadium oxyhalide or vanadium tetrahalide, and an inert organic liquid solvent for the monomers, by maintaining during the copolymerization the ratio of ethylene to the olefin dissolved in the solvent constant and further adding continuously one of the catalyst components in such an amount that the quantity of catalyst formed at any one time remains in solution in the polymerization mixture. Solvents mentioned are hexane, heptane, octane, nonane, decane, benzene, toluene, xylene, cyclohexane, methylcyclohexane, carbon tetrachloride, chlorobenzene, and dichlorobenzene. The linear 1-olefin may be propylene or butene. The aluminium compound may be aluminium tri-ethyl, or tri-isobutyl, or aluminium diethyl chloride. The copolymer may be vulcanized by use of a peroxide.
