[Also in Group X] A level road surface is laid by an automatic machine which maintains a screed at a constant height irrespective of any irregularities over which the machine travels by vertical adjustment of the screed to maintain it in the same position relative to a predetermined optical reference line which may take the form of a beam of light projected from a position ahead of the machine. As shown, the screed 4 of the machine VF which controls the thickness of the layer of bituminous material 1 is vertically adjustable by rotation of the screwed shaft 5 either manually or by the servo-motor 13. A rod 7 is fixed to the screed a vertical displacement of which causes a spot of light projected by the instrument 11<SP>1</SP> to depart from the centre position 9<SP>1</SP> of the translucent screen 9 and the spot of light can be returned to its central position by manually rotating the shaft 5 which adjusts the height of the screed. The machine may be operated automatically by impinging a beam of light on the two vertically displaced photo-electric cells 10, 10<SP>1</SP> such that a layer of the desired thickness is laid when the cells are evenly illuminated, any deviation of the screed causing one or other of the cells to receive more light the potential difference so produced being amplified to operate the servomotor 13 and restore the screed to its desired position. In modifications, the screed may be controlled remotely by cable or radio by an operator ahead of the machine who observes a reference mark on the screen 9 in the crosswires of a telescope.
