Abstract
857,019. Adjusting body height. WESTING- HOUSE BREMSEN-G.m.b.H. Sept. 9, 1959 [Sept. 10, 1958], No. 30746/59. Class 108(2). A compressed fluid vehicle suspension comprises a regulating device for an air spring 3 and a damping device. The regulating device consists of two valves 5, 6, actuated by a piston 7. When load on the vehicle chassis 1 is increased, a disc 21 on a shaft 20 is turned in a clockwise direction causing the piston 7 to move from left to right opening the valve 5. Thus compressed fluid flows from a chamber 14 into a pipe 16 leading to the spring 3, until the vehicle has been raised to its normal height. The disc 21 also causes a double headed piston 25 to move from right to left causing an increase of pressure in a chamber 26a of damping fluid and a corresponding decrease of pressure in a chamber 26b. The two chambers are connected by a pipe 27 the restricted cross-section of which can be varied. When the load on the vehicle is decreased the reverse process takes place. Rapid dynamic load variations are absorbed by a flexible member 33. The two chambers 26a, 26b, are also connected through a pilot valve 36 comprising a spring loaded control piston 39 adapted to be operated pneumatically or hydraulically through a pipe 37. The valve 36 is normally closed but it can be actuated on application of the steering wheel, brakes or manually, to allow immediate pressure equalisation of the two chambers 26a, 26b, a rapid reaction of the piston 7, and of the air spring 3.
