Abstract
857,015. Pruning appliances. BIGG, T. F. H. Aug. 17, 1959 [Sept. 11, 1958], No. 29114/58. Class 6(2). [Also in Group XIV] A pruning appliance comprises a hollow, tubular member 10 having a hand grip 43 and operating lever 30 at one end, and fitted at the other end with a cap 36 having a transverse slot 11 for entraining the branch to be severed, and an abutment surface 13 against which the branch is pressed by means described below. Slidably housed within the member 10 is a block 16, recessed at 17 for the attachment of a blade 14 thereto, the block being secured to a rod 19 pivoted to the lever 30, and being normally held in its retracted position within the tube 10 by a spring 33. Whilst the blade is operated, the branch to be severed is held against the abutment surface 13 by a pad 15, fixed to the upper end of a rod 21 slidable in a bore in the block 16, and urged away from the block by the compression spring 25. The severed branch can thus be retained between the surface 13 and pad 15 until such time as it is desired to release it. The construction of the appliance may be modified by fixing the block 16 and blade 14 to the tube 10 and by arranging for the cap 36, and therefore the abutment surface 13, to be slidable relatively to the tube. According to further modifications, the pad 15 may be rockable about a transverse axis so as to be capable of aligning itself with the cutting edge of the blade, and the member 10 may be telescopic, in which case the rod 19 is replaced by a Bowden cable.
