856,990. Fluid-pressure brakes. WESTING- HOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO. Ltd. Sept. 23, 1959 [Oct. 3, 1958], No. 31586/58. Class 103 (1); An electro-vacuum railway vehicle braking apparatus has as pipe means to interconnect the apparatus down a train of vehicles only a single vacuum supply pipe (not shown in drawing) which is adapted to be permanently charged, and comprising a sealed vacuum space at 13 at all times unconnected, other than through the vacuum supply pipe, with the apparatus in other vehicles in a train, electromagnetically-operated valves 15 and 16 to control communication, of the vacuum space, on the one hand with the vacuum supply pipe, and on the other hand, with the atmosphere, and a relay valve device 36, 37 to reproduce in the lower chamber of the brake cylinder, the pressure conditions prevailing in the vacuum space, at least for degrees of vacuum above a predetermined low degree. The vacuum storage reservoir 12 is preferably combined with the vacuum space 13 in a two-chamber reservoir to which is attached directly a unit including the electromagnetically - operated valves and the relay valve device.
