Abstract

856,616. Four-stroke engine construction; heating charge; valve-gear. FERGUSON RESEARCH Ltd., H. March 4, 1957 [March 12, 1956], No. 7590/56. Classes 7(2), 7(3) and 7(6). In a motor vehicle engine, opposed cylinders 22, Fig. 4, are cast integral with a crankcase 50 of inverted-U form in transverse cross-section and having tranverse compartment walls 81 with coaxial bores receiving main bearings 91, Fig. 3, of a pre-assembled crank-shaft unit 53, 91 located by screws 95...97. A lightweight sump (not shown) removably covers the crank-case bottom. A rear crank-case extension 100 houses a chain drive 102, 103 to a pre-assembled camshaft unit 55, 105, and a front crank-case cover 98 houses a cooling-water pump impeller 106 fast on the crank-shaft 53. The cam-shaft 55 actuates overhead inlet valves (not shown) and exhaust valves 27, Fig. 4, which, in the fourcylinder engine shown, are arranged in line in cylinder heads 23 each common to a respective cylinder pair, with the inlet valves together and the exhaust valves on each side thereof. The cover 98, Fig. 3, forms both a pump inlet drawing from the foot of a cooling-water radiator and a double pump delivery volute feeding hollow crank-case skirts 73, Fig. 4, from either end of which pipes 134, Fig. 6, lead to cylinder-head apertures 134A, Fig. 9, feeding via apertures 136A external galleries 135 having exit apertures 136B and exit nozzles 137 discharging cooling water on to the exhaust ports 123 and sparking plug bosses 139, the heated water then passing by passages 142 around the inlet ports 25 and discharging at 32, Fig. 4, to the head of the cooling water radiator. Cylinder water jackets 74 have thermo-syphonic circulation and may, according to the Provisional Specification, communicate with the cylinder-head water spaces.
