Abstract

Unsaturated hydrocarbons, particularly acetylene and ethylene, are formed by the pyrolysis of more saturated hydrocarbons wherein a ring or rings of flames is formed in a combustion <PICT:0855523/IV(b)/1> chamber by introduction of a fuel and combustion supporting gas through holes in a plurality of coaxial rings, surrounding the or each ring of flames with a screen of steam injected through a pair of opposing annular jets which meet at an angle to define a small combustion zone in which combustion is first partially effected, completing the combustion in the presence of the steam after mixing and injecting the hydrocarbon to be pyrolyzed into the hot gases obtained after completion of the combustion. In Fig. 1 the fuel and oxygen jets 19 and 20 are arranged around an annular notch 18 the sides of which are at an angle of 90 degrees to each other. Steam is injected through annular slots 23 and 24 arranged so that the steam jets meet at an angle of between 50 and 120 degrees. The hydrocarbon to be pyrolyzed is then injected through holes 25 and the pyrolysis mixture quenched by water from jets 17. Specification 843,884 is referred to.
