Abstract
Aldehydes are manufactured by the isomerization of a -olefine oxides at elevated temperature in the presence of a weakly acid catalyst, the a -olefine oxide used being diluted with the corresponding aldehyde to dissipate the heat of reaction. The process may be carried out continuously by mixing some of the aldehyde product with fresh olefine oxide and recirculating the mixture to the reactor. Olefine oxides which may be used as starting materials are, for example, ethylene oxide, propylene oxide 1.2-butylene oxide and styrene oxide. Preferably the proportion of oxide to aldehyde in the mixture entering the reactor is between 1 : 4 and 1 : 20 by weight. Suitable catalysts are, for example, potassium bisulphate, acid salts of phosporic acid or molybdenic acid, silica, alumina, alums or other double salts having an acid reaction such as potassium aluminium sulphate, sodium iron sulphate or potassium magnesium sulphate. The preferred temperature range for the reaction is 150 DEG -450 DEG C. If the cycled quantity of aldeyhyde is below that which corresponds to the total amount of heat to be dissipated some water may be introduced into the reactor.
