Abstract
854,751. Discharge lamps. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Feb. 21, 1957 [Feb. 24, 1956], No. 5890/57. Class 39(1). A high-pressure electric discharge lamp of the compact-source type includes one electrode having a conical cavity, the apex of which emerges into a cylindrical bore, and the discharge is caused to operate without focal spot. Such a lamp has a life of several hundred operating hours without focal spot since the temperature throughout the conical surface is exceedingly uniform and the cylindrical bore decreases the current strength at which the discharge without focal spot occurs. The bottom of the axial bore, which preferably has a diameter of 0À3 to 0À5 times the diameter of the electrode 3 and an axial length exceeding its diameter, may contain electron-emmissive material such as thorium oxide. The opening angle of the conical cavity 4 is 30 to 150 degrees and preferably about 120 degrees. The substantially spherical quartz envelope 1 is filled with xenon at a pressure of about 10 atmospheres at room temperature.
