In a rotary pump or compressor in which there is a guide-blade ring associated with each impeller, a chamber is provided between a guide-blade ring and a part adjoining it in the axial direction, the chamber communicating with a point at lower pressure than that of the medium flowing through the guide-blade ring, and the parts forming the chamber are sealed against each other in a manner permitting axial play. The reduced pressure in the chamber reduces the forces imposed on the pump or compressor housing by the pressure differentials acting on stator parts. In the double-flow pump shown, a chamber 12 is formed between a guide-blade ring 10 and an axially adjoining part, and chamber 15 and 16 are formed between a guide-blade ring 9 and axially adjacent parts on either side of it. The chambers are vented to atmosphere through passages 17, 18 and 19. Packing is provided between the parts forming each chamber, in a manner permitting axial play so that axial forces acting on one part are not transmitted to the other part. A similar construction is provided on the right-hand side of the pump, but an alternative arrangement, whereby passage 19<SP>1</SP> leads to the inlet 2 instead of to atmosphere is shown. In a modification, chambers 15 and 16 are omitted and chamber 12 is vented to the outlet side of the first stage. The pump may be of single-flow type.
