Abstract
854,023. Coiling; rolling. CROSS MANUFACTURING CO. (1938) Ltd. Sept. 9, 1958, No. 28882/58. Class 83 (4). A machine for coiling or otherwise treating wire or metal rod between two, or two sets of, rotary elements having coacting surfaces, one of the elements comprising, for example, a mandrel into which the wire is coiled, is characterized in that both sets of the rotary elements are driven and that the driving means for the same includes a differential gear in which a driving input is divided differentially into two outputs, and the latter are drivingly connected to the respective rotary element sets so as to obviate or substantially minimize slip between the two sets and between them and the wire treated therebetween. An electric motor 9 drives through change-speed gear 8 and shafts 26, 27, a crown wheel 18 of a differential gear 7. One output shaft 21 of the differential 7 drives, through chain and sprockets 23, 6 a mandrel 3, on to which wire is coiled as described in Specification 837,756, to which reference is made, by rollers 4 driven from the other output shaft 22 of the differential 7 by chains and sprockets 25, 5. The two rollers of the machine for rolling wire or rod described in Specification 748,805, to which reference is made, may each be driven by an output shaft of the same differential gear. Each pair of rollers used in making split rings as described in Specification 854,009 to which reference is made, may likewise be driven by an output shaft of the same differential gear.
