Abstract

854,016. Articulated vehicles. CHASESIDE ENGINEERING CO. Ltd., and LESKIEN, G. F. March 25, 1957 [Jan. 13, 1956], No. 1185/56. Classes 79(3) and 79(5). Steering mechanism for scrapers, dumpers and like vehicles comprises a steering member 1 and a connecting member 2 one of which members is mounted on a tractor unit 6 and the other on a trailer unit 12, a differential gear mounted between the members 1, 2 and means to rotate the cage 3 of the differential gear. In the preferred embodiment, the cage carries bevel gears meshing with sun wheels ,fixed to the members 1, 2 and is rigid with lugs 14 which together with arms 11 on the :member 2 support a pair of hydraulic or .pneumatic rams 4. When the cage 3 is rotated through a given angle by operation of the rams the differential gear causes the member 1 to turn through twice the given angle with respect to the member 2. The rams may be connected to the tractor instead of the trailer and only one ram may be used.
