Abstract
853,628. Saddles. SHIELDS, J. H. L. June 25, 1959 [July 18, 1958], No. 23167/58. Class 62. A saddle tree is made from components of thermo-plastic material which are united by a welding process. As shown in Fig. 1, a seat support 2 having an integral cantle portion 3 is butt welded to a pommel 1 of greater thickness the two parts being formed from sheet thermoplastic material such as rigid polyvinylchloride, which is heated and shaped on a plaster mould. The mould may also be used to support the two parts during the welding process. In an alternative construction. Fig. 8, separate side bars 12 are welded to the pommel 1, the side bars being joined by a cantle 3 which may be either an integral part or joined to the side bars by welding. A comparatively thin and resilient seat support 13 may be optionally provided. Formation of the saddle tree is completed by fitting a foam plastic or rubber cushion 4, Fig. 4, with adhesive, and attaching webbing straps 8, a leather saddle covering, Fig. 5 (not shown), and a padded under part (not shown) by tacks, the under part having pockets which fit the extremities of the pommel.
