Abstract

853,464. Filters ; purifying water. SEITZWERKE G.m.b.H. July 4, 1958 [July 5, 1957], No. 21457/58. Class 46. Water, particularly surface water containing, e.g., radioactive fission products, chemical warfare substances, bacteria and like organisms and mechanical impurities, is withdrawn by a pump 15, Fig. 1, through a suction strainer 11 and a container 13 charged with e.g. steel wool which acts as a filter and imparts ferrous ions to the water. Air is then drawn in at 16 and the water passes on to a vessel 18 shown in detail in Fig. 2. The water enters at 34, and flows first upwards, and then downwards between two cylindrical containers 32, 33. It then flows upwards through a pipe 35 into container 33 and out at 38. The water level is maintained constant by a float-operated vent valve device 37. In vessel 18 oxygen is absorbed and ferric hydroxide formed with consequent precipitation and flocculation of colloids. The water next passes through a multi-layer filter 21, each layer consisting of organic and/or inorganic fibrous and/or granular substances (e.g. asbestos kieselguhr and cellulose as prepared cardboard). The water next passes through active carbon 23 and an ion exchanger 25 followed by a saltcontent-indicating meter 27 (which may act as an impulse generator to control a shut-off device). Finally the water passes through a container 28, a sterilising filter 29 consisting of layers of fibrous and/or granular substances, and a container 30 where salt is added. The steel wool in container 13 may be partially or wholly copper-plated, or it may be replaced by aluminium splinters initially partly corroded with mercury or its compounds.
