Abstract
The invention comprises compounds of the formula: <FORM:0853441/IV(b)/1> wherein R is a C4-18 hydrocarbon radical, which may be an alkyl, alkenyl, aryl, aryl, araliphatic or cycloaliphatic radical, Q is an -R2-COOM or an-R2-O-R2-COOM radical, R2 is a C1-4 aliphatic hydrocarbon radical, a C2-4 hydroxy-substituted aliphatic hydrocarbon radical, a C2-4 aliphatic hydrocarbon radical containing an ether linkage, or a C3-4 hydroxysubstituted aliphatic hydrocarbon radical containing an ether linkage, acid M is an alkali metal. The compounds are prepared by reacting one mole of a compound of the formula: <FORM:0853441/IV(b)/2> or <FORM:0853441/IV(b)/3> with two moles of a monohalomonocarboxylic acid :-Halogen-R2-COOH or Halogen-R2-O-R2-COOH, and 4,5 to 5 moles of an alkali metal hydroxide, or by reacting one mole of a compound of the formula: <FORM:0853441/IV(b)/4> with 1 mole of said monohalomonocarboxylic acids and 2,5 to 3 moles of an alkali metal hydroxide, reacting the product with 1 mole of a compound Cl-R2-H to give a product having the formula: <FORM:0853441/IV(b)/5> which is further reacted with 1 mole of said monohalomonacarboxylic acids and 2 moles of alkali metal hydroxide. A compound of the formula: <FORM:0853441/IV(b)/6> in which R is lauryl, is prepared by heating lauric acid with ethylene diamine in an inert solvent.
