Abstract
852,880. Automatic temperature and current control systems. GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO. Aug. 18, 1958 [March 31, 1958], No. 26444/58. Class 38 (4). In a tyre vulcanization and retreading machine, the temperature of an electrical heating element is maintained at a pre-determined value by switching off the current, when the resistance of the element reaches a predetermined value, by means responsive to the voltage and current of the element. A power supply is connected through a switch 16 to energize a timer 23 set to a desired vulcanizing time, a cycling timer 27 and a power-on indicator light 25. After 30 seconds a mercury switch 30 is closed by the cycling timer to energize a relay 28 which closes a contact 31 locking-in the relay, and contacts 47, 48 connecting the heating element 51 to the supply, a contact 26 being opened to de-energize the timer 27 and the power-on light 25. A current relay 35 closes a contact 34 to light a heat-up indicator lamp 32 and energize a transformer 33 applying through a rectifier 36 a direct voltage, proportional to the supply voltage, to a resistor 42. Through a current transformer 46 and a rectifier 45 a direct voltage, proportional to the current through the heating element, is applied to a resistor 43. The potential difference between resistors 42, 43 causes a current to flow in a coil 40 of a meter relay 39 and deflect a pointer 38. At a pre-set deflection, a circuit is made through a relay 37 and maintained by a current flowing through a hold-on coil 41. A contact 29 of relay 37 opens to de-energize the relay 28 and reset the temperature control system, the cycle being repeated after 30 seconds by the timer 23. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), an auxiliary circuit controlling a plurality of heating elements is connected to points 52a-55a and 14, 15. The auxiliary circuit comprises a sequence switching arrangement whereby the heating elements are separately temperature controlled, a relay steps the sequence switch past a disconnected heating element.
