Abstract

852,216. Pipe stoppers. ESSO RESEARCH & ENGINEERING CO. June 10, 1958 [June 19, 1957], No. 18563/58. Class 99(1). A tube plugging device comprises a plug member 28 having tapered and cylindrical portions 32, 36 separated by a weakened section 34, e.g. a V-section groove, a sleeve 52 having a tapered inner wall adapted to fit over the tapered portion of the plug and provided with spring clip members 58, means for securing an elongated actuating member 16 to the plug portion 26, and means such as a tapered collar 38 for normally abutting the thickened end part 53 of the sleeve. In use, the device is pushed entirely through a tube to be plugged and then pulled back so that the members 58 engage the end of the tube and the member 28 wedges the sleeve against the wall of the tube, after which the plug member breaks at the weakened section to leave a solid plug in the tube.
