Abstract
852,156. Roofing tiles; roofs. BURGESS, D. C. May 7, 1957 [March 2, 1956; April 6, 1956], Nos. 6717/56 and 10644/56. Classes 20(4) and 87(1) A roofing tile having three or more sides is bounded on each side by a trough-section margin. The half-round trough-sections 3a on certain sides are of smaller radius than those 3b on the remaining sides so that a number of tiles can be assembled in overlapping relationship with their upper surfaces coplanar, as in Fig. 3. The tile may be rectangular, square, diamondshaped, hexagonal or triangular and may have curved sides. In a barrel vault roof, Figs. 5-7 (not shown), square tiles curved about a diagonal and triangular tiles also of curved crosssection are used. In Fig. 9, the tile consists of asbestos-cement 14 reinforced by a sheet 15 of expanded metal which projects beyond the sides of the tile to form the trough-section margins 13. Alternatively a sheet metal tile may have expanded metal troughs welded to its edges. The surface of the tile may be formed with channels extending diagonally or bisecting opposite sides. The recessed underface of the tile may have a filling of slag wool, glass wool, asbestos or cork backed with a perforated sheet of hardboard or plasterboard. To form a roof the tiles are assembled in overlapping relationship, Fig. 3, reinforcing rods 8 are laid in the troughs with spacers 9 at intervals, and concrete 10 is poured in. The expanded metal margins may be spot-welded together before the concrete is applied. The roof is covered with a sheet of heat-insulating material and a layer of asphalt.
