Abstract

852,095. Rock-breaking apparatus. WESTMINSTER DREDGING CO. Ltd. July 30, 1959 [May 3, 1958], No. 14192/58. Class 68(1). In an underwater rock-breaking apparatus having a rock needle or drop hammer 1 which is hoisted by a winch drum 4 and cable 2, and is dropped by de-clutching the drum 4 from the shaft 5, the clutch is operated by a servomotor responsive to slackness in the cable, so that, after impact, the slackness in the cable operates the servomotor to clutch the drum to the shaft and to hoist the hammer. The servomotor is operated to de-clutch the drum 4 by a control device 12 which is actuated by a stop 17 on the cable 2 at the top of the ascent of the hammer, the device being separately suspended from a sheave 14 by a cable 13 on a hand-winch 15. As described, the servomotor system is pneumatic. The cable 2 is trained over a sheave 3 at the head of a jib (not shown) and the hammer 1 is guided in a sleeve (not shown) suspended from the jib. Pressure air is supplied at 20 and with the valves 21, 24, 26 open and the valves 22, 27 closed, the pneumatic servomotor clutch may be operated manually by the valve 23. With the valves 24, 26 closed and valves 21, 22, 27 open air is supplied by the line 9 to a piston valve 8 which is closed when the cable 2 is taut, but when, on impact, slackness occurs, the air pressure moves the piston rod 6 inwardly and air is supplied to the line 10 leading to a piston valve 11. The piston of the valve 11 is moved by the admitted air pressure to open ports whereby the line 20 is connected through the 'valve 27 and line 28 to the servomotor to clutch the drum 4 to the shaft 5 to hoist the hammer. When the stop 17 hits the bracket 16, the valve 12 is actuated to connect the line 19 with the line 18 and pressure is applied to the opposite end of the piston of the valve 11. The piston is moved back to its original position, the pressure spaces in the valve are connected to a venting port, and the servo-motor operates to de-clutch the drum from the shaft.
