Abstract

851,774. Photographic emulsions. GENERAL ANILINE & FILM CORPORATION. Sept. 17, 1958 [Sept. 26, 1957], No. 29797/58. Class 98(2) Silver halide dispersed as in gelatin, polyvinyl alcohol, casein or carboxymethyl cellulose and sensitised with an ethylene oxide polymer or ester or ether thereof has added thereto preferably shortly before coating onto a support a poly-N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone as stabilising and anti-fogging agent. A synergistic effect of the combination is referred to, that is that while the pyrrolidone alone increases speed it has no effect in reducing fog but does have this effect when used with the ethylene oxide derivatives. In an Example a silver bromocodide emulsion brought up to its maximum sensitivity and treated with finals such as sensitising dyes, stabilisers and hardeners is treated also with polyethylene oxide louryl ether and the above mentioned pyrrolidone, coated on a cellulose ester base and dried, and relative speed, fog and oven fog data are given and compared with such before the latter treatments. Polyethylene oxide itself and its oleyl ether, and di-polyethylene-glycoxy-decane are quoted and similar compounds indicated for use with the pyrrolidone, additionally.
