Abstract

Polymeric materials are made by masticating a mixture of a polymer which is not rubberlike at room temperature, i.e. 25 DEG C., a polymerizable olefinic compound, a small amount of an organic compound miscible in the mixture, and, if desired or necessary, a plasticising solvent for the monomer, the selection of the constituents of the mixture and the relative proportions thereof being such that the mixture is rubbery at the temperature of mastication, oxygen being excluded at least partially during the process, if necessary or desired. The organic compound is stated to exert an accelerating effect on the polymerization. Polymers specified are polymethyl methacrylate, a styrene/butadiene copolymer, polystyrene, polyvinyl butyral, epoxide resins and ethyl and benzyl celluloses. Monomers specified are methyl methacrylate, methacrylic acid and styrene. The organic compounds specified are selected from alcohols, phenols, hydrocarbons, ethers, amines, acids, amino-acids, amides, aldehydes, ketones, nitriles, esters, peroxides, metal salts, alkoxides and starch. The process includes the mastication of a polymer, e.g. polystyrene or polymethyl methacrylate, together with its parent monomer.
