Abstract

The invention comprises 2:4:6-trioxopiperidine derivatives of the general formula <FORM:0851674/IV(b)/1> (wherein R1,R2,R3 and R4 each represent an aryl or alkyl radical and R5 represents hydrogen or an alkyl or dialkylaminoalkyl radical), and the preparation thereof by condensing a disubstituted cyanacetyl chloride of the formula <FORM:0851674/IV(b)/2> with an ester of a disubstituted acetic acid of the formula <FORM:0851674/IV(b)/3> cyclizing the resulting tetrasubstituted cyanoacetylacetic ester to give a compound (I) in which R5 is hydrogen, and, if desired, treating this with an alkylating or dialkylaminoalkylating agent. The products are useful as sedative, anticonvulsant and hypnotic agents in human and veterinary medicine, and as intermediates in the preparation of other active substances.
