Abstract

<PICT:0851609/III/1> <PICT:0851609/III/2> An ornamental candle comprises a wick, a mass of wax around the wick forming a candle stem, and one or more wax layers which extend over the whole surface of the candle except for a region in the vicinity of the point at which the wick projects from the candle stem, the wax from which these layers are formed being relatively hard compared to that from which the candle stem is formed and of such a nature that it does not burn. Fig. 1 shows a candle in which two layers 3 and 31 of relatively hard wax surround the wax mass 2 in which is embedded wick 1. Fig. 2 shows a candle having a single layer 3 of hard wax as it appears after burning for some time. In this state air may be delivered to the flame through preformed holes 14 which pass completely through the hard wax layers and extend partly into the wax mass 2. The top edge of the hard wax may be even, or may be serrated, or may have decoration in the form of leaf petals 8 attached. Other embellishments may be attached to the side of the candle and the candle may if desired be varnished on the outside. The hard layers are sufficiently thin so that, when alight, the candle is illuminated from the interior.
