Abstract

Additives for retarding the settling and cementing of pigments in pigment suspensions comprise neutral salts or salt mixtures of derivatives of sulphosuccinic acid of the general formula: <FORM:0850878/IV(a)/1> or <FORM:0850878/IV(a)/2> in which R represents a lipophilic hydrocarbon residue containing 8 to 18 carbon atoms, X represents an imido or substituted imido group and Y and Y1 represent the same or different organic or inorganic cations. According to examples, a monoalkyl amido-sulphosuccinic acid salt (see Group IV(b)) is added to lacquers of chlorinated rubber, chlorinated diphenyl, solvents and pigments, of cyclo-rubber, chlorinated diphenyl, solvents and pigments, and of chlorinated rubber, tricresyl phosphate, and chlorinated diphenyl, pigments and solvents. German Specifications 920,144 940,929 and 946,837 are referred to.ALSO:Sulphosuccinic acid derivatives of the general formula: <FORM:0850878/IV(b)/1> in which R represents a lipophilic, preferably aliphatic or cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon residue containing 8-18 carbon atoms, if desired substituted or interrupted by hetero-atoms or hetero-atom groups and preferably a mixture of such residues, X represents an imido group in which the hydrogen atom can be replaced if desired by an organic residue, and Y and Y1 represent the same or different organic or inorganic cations are prepared by reacting amines containing 8-18 carbon atoms or mixtures of such amines with an equivalent quantity of maleic anhydride in a non-reactive, preferably alcoholic solvent at a temperature below 50 DEG C. The solution of maleic acid monoalkyl amide so obtained is mixed with an aqueous solution of an equivalent amount of a bisulphite neutralised with an organic or inorganic base. Examples are given of the preparation of a monoalkyl amido-sulpho-succinic acid salt by reacting 0,5 mol of maleic anhydride with 0,5 mol of coconut amine in butanol, then adding thereto an aqueous solution of 0,5 mol of sodium bisulphite and 0,5 mol of triethanolamine. German Specifications 920,144, 940,929 and 946,837 are referred to.ALSO:Additives for retarding the settling and cementing of pigments in pigment suspensions comprise neutral salts or salt mixtures of derivatives of sulphosuccinic acid of the general formula: <FORM:0850878/III/1> in which R represents a lipophilic hydrocarbon residue containing 8 to 18 carbon atoms, X represents an imido or substituted imido group and Y and Y1 represent the same or different organic or inorganic cations. In examples, a monoalkyl amido-sulphosuccinic acid salt (see Group IV(b)) is added to lacquers comprising (2) chlorinated rubber, chlorinated diphenyl, solvents and pigments, (3) cyclo-rubber, chlorinated diphenyl, solvents and pigments, and (4) chlorinated rubber, tricrescyl phosphate, and chlorinated diphenyl, pigments and solvents, and the results compared with similar lacquers not containing the additive. In Example 5 the additive is added to a polyvinyl butyral lacquer and the results compared. German Specifications 920,144, 940,929 and 946,837 are referred to.
