Abstract
850,617. Magnetic amplifiers. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO. Ltd. Oct. 24, 1958 [March 7, 1958], No. 7406/58. Addition to 825,091. Class 40 (9). [Also in Group XXXV] The system for stabilizing a D.C. voltage by charging a capacitor from a rectifier through a " resetting " reactor, and controlling the resetting by discharging the capacitor back through the reactor and a controlled valve, as disclosed in the parent Specification, is modified by the inclusion of an auxiliary control winding on the reactor, or using a voltage-doubling rectifier, or both. In one embodiment, Fig. 1, in which the capacitor 5 is charged through the reactor winding 4 from a bridge rectifier 3, the reactor is reset by bias current through winding 4 and a resistor 90, this current being such as to almost saturate the core. The bias is opposed by current through an auxiliary winding 41 and valve 61, which is controlled in accordance with deviations of the voltage across capacitor 5. In the second embodiment, Fig. 2, a voltage doubler is provided in which two capacitors 51, 52 are charged from rectifiers 31, 32, through reactor windings 42, 43, respectively. The valve 62 controls the resetting current as before. In further modifications. Figs. 4 ... 6 (not shown), auxiliary windings are provided to either increase the voltage applied to the control-valve, or to compensate for rectifier reverse current, or to combine reactor control as in Fig. 1 with the voltage doubler of Fig. 2
