In the manufacture of glass fibres by the centrifugal spinning method external means are provided for heating the glass in the neighbourhood of the periphery of the centrifuge from a primary source of heat independent of the alternating blast and the gases in the neighbourhood of the blast from a secondary source of heat spaced from the primary source approximately in the direction of movement of the glass. Annular heaters are employed both of which may be gas-heated or the one heating the glass may be electrical. The attenuating is effected by an annular blast of steam which may be parallel to the axis of the spinner or radial thereto.
