Abstract

Interpolymers of 55 to 85% by weight of styrene, 5 to 35% by weight of ethyl acrylate and 5 to 15% by weight of methacrylic acid may be prepared by polymerising a mixture of monomers having the specified proportions in the presence of 25 to 400%, based on the weight of said mixture, of an aromatic solvent for said mixture at a temperature of 125 DEG to 200 DEG C. until substantially all the monomers are polymerised. The solvent may be benzene, toluene, xylene or mixtures thereof, and polymerisation may be effected in the presence of initiators, e.g. ditertiary-butyl peroxide, benzaldehyde peroxide, cumene hydroperoxide, 2,2-bis(tertiary-butylperoxy) butane, tertiary-butyl peracetate and diazoamino benzene, activators, inhibitors, surface active agents and chain transfer agents. The interpolymers may be used in coating compositions comprising compatible mixtures of 30 to 90% by weight of the interpolymer and 70 to 10% of melamine-formaldehyde-monohydric alcohol condensates, urea-formaldehyde-monohydric alcohol condensates or mixtures thereof, in solution in volatile organic solvents. The condensates may be prepared by reacting (1) urea and formaldehyde or a reaction product thereof, e.g. dimethylol urea, and (2) melamine and formaldehyde or a reaction product thereof, e.g. tetra-, penta- or hexamethylol melamine, with saturated monohydric alcohols, e.g. methanol, ethanol, propanol or butanol. Specified solvents are aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons, alcohols, ketones and esters, e.g. xylene, methyl ethyl ketone, butanol and mixtures thereof. The coating compositions may also contain pigments, e.g. metal oxides such as titanium dioxide, hydroxides, chromates, silicates, sulphides, sulphates and carbonates, carbon blacks, organic dyestuffs and lakes, and metal flake pigments such as aluminium.
