Abstract
Thermoplastic segmented polymers having, as a backbone, a thermoplastic ethylenic addition polymer providing a continuous carbon skeleton made up of repeating <FORM:0848915/IV(a)/1> units of which some, but not all, carry as branches polymer chains provided by a thermoplastic addition polymer of one or more monomers containing a single CH2 = C < group, which chains are attached to the carbon skeleton via ureido groups are prepared by bringing about the reaction between (1) the amino groups in a thermoplastic addition polymer of one or more monomers containing a single CH2 = C < group and the chains of which carry at one end thereof an - NH2 group and (2) the isocyanate groups in a thermoplastic ethylenic addition copolymer of a mixture of monomers comprising at least one isocyanato compound and at least one other different comonomer, the reaction being carried out in a dry, inert, organic solvent for the polymer and copolymer at a temperature of from -20 DEG to 150 DEG C. Polymers (1) specified are polystyrene polyvinyl toluene and polymethyl methacrylate containing terminal amino groups. Copolymers (2) specified are those of isocyanatoalkyl vinyl thers particularly those described in Specification 763,635, the isocyanatoalkyl esters of acrylic and methacrylic acids specified in Specification 759,860, and isocyanatostyrene with monomers such as alkyl cycloalkyl and aralkyl esters of acrylic and methacrylic acids, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, N-substituted acrylamides and methacrylamides, vinyl esters, styrene, p-methyl and p-chlorostyrenes, alpha-methylstyrene and vinyl ethers. Polymers containing terminal amino groups may be obtained in the following ways: (a) styrene is polymerized in liquid ammonia using an alkali metal amide or sodium as a catalyst, (b) styrene or vinyl toluene is polymerised in the presence of a chain transfer agent such as beta-mercaptoethylamine or oaminobenzenethiol, an illustration of this method being given in Example 8 in which vinyl toluene is heated with mercaptoethylamine and azodiisobutyronitrile and (c) methyl methacrylate is polymerised with mercaptoethanol to provide a polymer with hydroxyl end-groups which is reacted with a diisocyanate, and the resulting isocyanate end-groups are reacted with an alkylene diamine, e.g. ethylenediamine.
