Abstract

Paper is internally bonded with a copolymer formed from (a) 60 to 95% of conjugated diene(s) and/or chlorodienes of 4 to 10 C atoms, e.g. butadiene, isoprene or chloroprene, (b) 1 to 30% of vinyl compound(s) such as acrylonitrile, styrene, or esters of acrylic or methacrylic acid formed from aliphatic alcohols of 1 to 10 C atoms, e.g. methyl methacrylate, and (c) 1 to 39% of one or more ethylenically unsaturated monocarboxylic acids of the formula: <FORM:0848808/IV(a)/1> where either R1 or R2 represents an alkyl radica of 6 to 9 carbon atoms or a halogen or hydrogen, and the other, hydrogen, e.g. crotonic, cis-2-butanoic, sorbic, cinnamic or acrylic acid, &c. A major proportion of the carboxylic groups may be cross-linked with polyvalent cations, e.g. from zinc oxide or sodium aluminate.
