Abstract
The invention comprises a process for the preparation of aniline by the continuous reduction of nitrobenzene with molecular hydrogen in the liquid phase, and in the presence of hydrogenation catalysts which is carried out in a plurality of series connected reaction vessels, the reaction mixture being cooled after it has been drawn off from each reaction vessel and before it is introduced into the next reaction vessel simultaneously with fresh reaction mixture. An example is given using a Raney nickel catalyst. The reaction mixture drawn off from each reaction vessel may be cooled to room temperature or even below.
