Abstract
A detergent sponge comprises a body of resiliently distortable substance, preferably polyurethane, having an alveolar structure extending uniformly throughout, in which at least part of the alveoles are entirely filled by a charge of water-soluble detergent, which may be in solid, liquid, pasty or powdered form; an alkyl sulphate is a suitable detergent. The detergent may be introduced into the sponge body either by injection into the sponge under pressure by means of one or more atomizing nozzles in the vat containing the polyurethane immediately after formation and during the escape period of the gases which cause the formation of the alveoles, or by means of injection needles introduced into the sponge, the needles being preferably provided with two spacer plates on either side which are forced apart under the pressure of the injected detergent so creating a cavity. When a pasty or powdered detergent is used, the central core may be surrounded by secondary cores throughout the entire sponge; when the charge is liquid the central cavity may be first treated with a silicone or a water soluble plastic material.
