Abstract

Gelatinous precipitates are formed by slowly mixing aqueous solutions of (a) a water-soluble salt of a long chain aliphatic sulphate and (b) a water-soluble salt of a long chain aliphatic quaternary ammonium compound. Examples of (a) are sodium or potassium lauryl sulphate, sodium octyl sulphate, or sodium decyl sulphate, and examples of (b) are lauryl or cetyl pyridinium chloride, octadecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride, or a dimethyl dialkenyl quaternary ammonium compound of the formula: (CH3)2 [CH3-C(CH3)2 - CH-C(CH3)2 - CH2 - CH = CH - CH2]2 N+ Cl.- Two or more of the compounds (a) or (b) may be used.
