Abstract
Fabrics consisting of or containing linear aromatic polyester fibres are subjected to high pressure at elevated temperatures, so as to deform the cross-sections of at least part of the fibres, then to an intermediate heat-setting treatment, and finally to an alkali treatment, so that the cross-sections of the deformed fibres finally resemble that of natural degummed silk. Preferably the fabric consists of or contains a major proportion of polyethylene terephthalate fibres, but it may consist of or contain linear aromatic copolyester fibres, including copolyesters containing sulphonic acid or sulphonate groups. Deformation of the fibres may be achieved by calendering the fabrics with smooth rolls or Schreiner rolls, preferred conditions comprising treatment at fabric temperatures of 100-450 DEG F., especially 100 DEG -350 DEG F., under pressures of 0,12-2 tons per linear inch, expecially 0,2-0,8 tons per linear inch, pressure being applied uniformly over the whole surface area. The alkali treatment may be carried out in aqueous alkaline solution in such a manner that the fabric loses at least 5% of its weight, preferably 5-25%, and the concentration of alkaline material in the bath may be at least 2% based on the bath weight, alkali-metal hydroxides (especially sodium hydroxide) being preferred, although alkaline-earth metal hydroxides and salts of alkali metals with weak acids (e.g. sulphides, sulphites, phosphates and silicates) may also be used. The intermediate heat-setting treatment may be carried out at 250 DEG -450 DEG F. by application of dry heat, with the fabric relaxed or unrelaxed. If desired the fabric, after the application of the pressure treatment, may be soap scoured at the boil while free to shrink, and dried. In an example, a plain weave fabric of polyethylene terephthalate yarn is scoured with soap, dried, and then calendered at 300 DEG F., 0,5 ton per linear inch pressure and 25 yards per minute fabric speed. The fabric is then heat-set on a pintenter at 440 DEG F. for one minute with 5% overfeed in warp direction and two inches under width. It is then immersed for 5 mins. in boiling 3% by weight caustic soda, at a liquor to goods ratio of 50 : 1, and is then rinsed, washed with 1% acetic acid, re-rinsed, and dried. The fabric loses 25% of its weight during the alkali treatment. Fabrics treated according to the invention show enhanced aesthetic properties as, e.g., hand, drape, scroop and rustle, suppleness, surface dryness, liveliness, lustre and surface cover.
