Abstract

846,830. Making electrical components; jointing by stamping and forging. MURRAY MANUFACTURING CORPORATION. Dec. 31, 1958, No. 42259/58. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A method for attaching a flange to a relatively soft tubular member the flange being dimensioned to fit snugly on said tubular member, comprises placing the flange on the tubular member and deforming a part of the surface of said flange which extends at right angles to the tubular member in an inwardly radial direction to displace an inner edge thereof sufficiently to bite into the surface of said tubular member. In an embodiment in the manufacture of a tube pole piece assembly for circuit breakers, the brass tube 1 having a closed end 2 surrounded by the annular pole piece 3 is supported on a stationary block 4 and a cupshaped steel slug 5 is placed in the bottom of the tube. A swaging tool 6, comprising concentric cylindrical portions 7 and 8 is lowered so that a projection 9 on the end of the outer portion 7 deforms the pole piece 3 inwardly to bite into the tube and the central cylindrical portion 8 flattens the slug 5 to wedge it in the bottom of the tube (Fig. 4). In another embodiment the pole piece comprises an annular portion 15 and a base 16 extending beyond the annular portion as at 17. The slug 5, the tube 1 and the pole piece are mounted on the tool 6 and a washer 18 surrounding the pole piece is supported on a spring-loaded pressure plate 19. The block 4 is lowered to effect a jointed assembly as shown in Fig. 7.
