Abstract
846,579. Positive clutches. NORTON IN-. DUSTRIES Ltd. June 23,1958 [July 2, 1957], No. 20822/57. Class 80 (2). A key clutch for power presses of the kind wherein a key 11, pivoted at 13 on a driven member 8, is projected radially outwards by a spring 12 into clutch engagement with one of a series of one or more internal recesses 7 in a driving-ring 4 when a stop 17 is withdrawn axially from the path of a cam part 16 formed on one side of the key 11, has a semi-cylindrical surface at the end 11a of the key which during clutch engagement bears against a complementary surface on a flange 8a of the driven member 8. The clutch is disengaged by moving the stop 17 axially into the path of the cam 16 which then depresses the key 11 to the disengaged position shown. The free end of the key 11 has an arcuate surface 11c bearing against a complementary surface 4a at one side of the recess 7, to transmit load torque through the key in compression rather than shear. During disengagement the key surface 11c bears against the end of a hardened steel block 18 fast on the driven member 8, thus preventing shear forces being applied to the pivot-pin 13 by the cam 16. Lead surfaces 4b are provided on the inner periphery of the driving-ring between the recesses.
