Abstract

846,548. Coating fabrics; laminates. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. May 1, 1957 [May 12, 1956], No. 14834/56. Class 140. Coated fabric for use in making mats, roadmarking strips, laminated belting and other articles are made by passing the fabric against an elongated rectangular orifice of a heated die through which a plastic composition is extruded on and into the fabric. As shown, the fabric 3 drawn from a reel 4 is preheated at 5 and pressed against the extrusion orifice 2 by a roller, bar or plate 6 which may be sufficiently flexible to permit adjustment in relation to the orifice at different points along its length. The coated fabric may be surfaced with a plastic layer applied by similar apparatus in which the orifice is spaced from the fabric and the roller &c. 6 is replaced by a pair of rollers the upper of which may be embossed or air or watercooled. The coating and surfacing materials may comprise plasticized p.v.c. or a copolymer of vinyl chloride with vinyl acetate or vinylidene chloride, natural rubber, balata, guttapercha, or a synthetic rubber such as polybutadiene or a copolymer of butadiene with styrene, acrylonitrile, methyl methacrylate, methyl isopropenyl ketone, or vinyl pyridine.
