Abstract

846,528. Doll's eyes. J. F. J. PRODUCTS Ltd. April 25, 1958, No. 13273/58. Class 132(3). A sleeping doll's individual eye unit comprises a hollow shell formed of two separate but mating halves, there being a recessed portion on the mating edge of each half, which portions together form an eye aperture in the shell, and a weighted eyeball and eyelid element pivoted within the shell so as to be capable of limited sleeping movement. As shown, a substantially spherical shell 1 is made up from two identical injection moulded halves 2 and 3 mated together by pins 7 and sockets 8 at their peripheries, a front aperture 5 simulating an eye opening and a rearwardly extending flange 6 preventing rotation of the shell within the doll's head. A moulded synthetic plastic eyeball and eyelid element 4, pivoted within the shell 1 by projections 9 engaging recesses 10, comprises a substantially hemispherical shell of which the upper portion 11 simulates an eyelid and has a curved slot 13 from which eyelashes 12 protrude, the front part has a recess accommodating an iris and pupil unit 14, and the lower portion has an integrally moulded rearward extension 15 with a metal weight 16 clamped to it. As shown, the mating halves 2 and 3 of the shell 1 are disposed on each side of the eyeball and eyelid element 4 but in an alternative embodiment they are disposed above and below it, slots formed between the mating edges, e.g. by opposed semi-circular recesses, then accommodating pivot pins on the element 4. The element 4 may have a swivel connection between its eyelid and eyeball portions, as described in Specification 754,047 to permit a "flirting" movement in addition to the sleeping movement.
