Abstract

Polymerizable compositions comprising an unsaturated polyester and a comonomer have added thereto to inhibit gel formation, a paraalkoxy or para-aryloxy phenol in an amount of 1 x 10-6 to 2 X 10-5 mols per 100 grams of the composition. The polyester may be formed from propylene or diethylene glycol and maleic or fumaric acid with or without phthalic acid. The comonomer may be styrene, acrylic or methacrylic acid or their esters or nitrites and mixtures thereof, specified esters are ethyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate and 1,3-butanediol dimethacrylate. The inhibitor may be para-methoxy, -ethoxy, -butoxy, -phenoxy or -benzyloxy phenol. The composition can be polymerized conventionally by addition of benzoyl peroxide.
