846,071. Moulding turbine rotors &c. WARNKEN, E. P. July 10, 1958, No. 22154/58. Class 87(2). [Also in Groups VIII and XXVI] The rotor of a turbine or a similar rapidly rotating part comprises a disc of resin-impregnated laminated glass or other fabric the fibres of which are pre-stressed in tension during setting of the resin, the latter being consequentially subjected to compression, preferably greater than the centrifugal force to be encountered during normal running of the rotor. As shown, Fig. 1, two discs 12, 14 each comprising six layers of resin-impregnated glass fabric angularly offset at 15 degree intervals, are pre-stressed to the dish-shape shown during setting of the resin and are centrally apertured and clamped to rotate about a shaft 10. The outer spaced edges of the discs enclose a ring 24, which is secured by bolts 26 and is slotted as at 27<SP>1</SP> to receive turbine blades 27. Instead of two discs 12, 14 a rotor may comprise one such disc only. The discs are shaped by a bevelled edged die 37, Fig. 4, co-operating with a dished base 38 on which the disc 12 is clamped by a ring 34 having pins 31 passing through holes in the disc and itself held by clamps 36. Each disc may have on each side a facing disc of smaller diameter which is not peripherally clamped during moulding and therefore is not prestressed.
