Abstract

845,216. Digital electric calculating-apparatus. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. June 13, 1958 [June 20, 1957], No. 19410/57. Class 106 (1). In an electric calculating circuit for adding " 1 " to a number of which each digit is expressed as a multi-element code combination, comprising means for adding " 1 " to a digit of the number, if the addition produces the code combination representing the radix of the number, this combination is replaced by the combination which represents zero and " 1 " is added to the next higher digit of the number. As described, the circuit forms part of a subscriber's metering arrangement in an automatic telephone system, e.g. as described in Specification 841,949. The arrangement includes a ferrite matrix store (not shown) in which each storage cell corresponds to a different subscriber; when a cell is operated by a meter pulse, it causes a section of a track on a magnetic drum containing the corresponding meter record to be selected, such record then being applied serially in the form of " 0 " and " 1 " signals on lines R0, R1 to the unit adding circuit shown. Each record comprises 20 bits meshed by corresponding timing signals TA1 (not shown) to TA20, including a number (to which " 1 " is to be added) comprising 4 binary coded decimal digits in positions TA4-TA7, TA8- TA11, TA12-TA15 and TA16-TA19 repectively. The unit adder comprises gating network G1-G8 which, if bistable trigger DO is set to DOO, reverses each bit received up to and including the first " 0," DO then being reset by signal RO to DO1. The decimal digits from the adder are set up in turn on pattern movement stepping register DS1-DS4 and are normally transferred therefrom to temporary store WS1-WS20 comprising a further stepping register for storing the complete new record; if however, the output of the adder is binary 1010 (representing " 10 "), test gate G9 causes trigger DR to be set to DR1 whereby gate G11 is operated to enter " 0 " in the temporary store instead of the digit in DS1-DS4, and DO is again set to DOO to cause " 1 " to be added to the next higher decimal digit. The add " 1 " operation is initiated by signal CF1 which sets CC to CC1 so as open gates G3, G6 and to allow clock pulses PA from the drum to step the registers, and the new record is subsequently extracted from register WS1-WS20 by signal RI1.
