Abstract

A polyepoxide composition comprises (i) an epoxy compound having a 1,2-epoxide equivalency greater than one, (ii) at least one monohydric primary or secondary alcohol, and (iii) an anhydride component in the form of pyromellitic dianhydride or of a mixture of pyromellitic dianhydride with one or more mono-anhydrides of dicarboxylic acids (the dianhydride being at least 50% by weight of such an anhydride mixture), there being 0,6-1,1 anhydride group of (iii) per epoxy group of (i), and 0,1-0,6 alcoholic hydroxyl groups of (ii) per anhydride group of (iii). Specified compounds are:-(i) an epichlorhydrin/4,41 - isopropylidene diphenol resin, 3, - 4 - epoxy - 6-methyl - cyclohexylmethyl 3,4 - epoxy-6-methyl-cyclohexanecarboxylate, and epoxidized soybean oil; (ii) tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol, furfuryl alcohol, the monomethyl ether of ethylene glycol, n-butanol, benzyl alcohol, 2-(hydroxymethyl)-tetrahydropyran, cyclohexanol, 2-phenoxyethanol, and a ,a ,o -trihydroperfluoro-n-alkyl alcohols; (iii) phthalic and/or maleic anhydrides. Amine accelerators are also preferably present, e.g., p,p1-methylene dianiline, benzylamine, tert-butylamine, ethylene diamine, aniline, diisopropylamine, dimethylbenzylamine, nicotinic acid, the tris (2-ethylhexanoate) of 2,4,6-tris(dimethylaminomethyl) phenol, glutamic acid, and dicyandiamide. Uses. Casting, potting, adhesives and laminates.
