Abstract

844,996. Expansion Joints. UNITED STATES RUBBER CO. Feb. 26, 1959 [April 30, 1958], No. 6663/59. Class 99(1). In an expansion joint formed of rubber plies 15, 17, 20 and rubber coated or impregnated fabric plies 16, 19 and having an annular arch portion 12 interconnecting flanged generally cylindrical portions 10, 11 which have embedded therein axially spaced, circumferentially extending metal reinforcing rings 18, rigid metal spacers 21 extend between the rings 18 to prevent migration thereof and are spaced circumferentially around the joint so that a rubber-torubber bond is formed in the areas between the spacers. As shown, the expansion joint is secured by bolts to pipes P1, P2. The spacers 21 consist of steel cylinders with their ends contoured to abut the cylindrical surface of the rings 18 to which they are welded or brazed. The spacers 21 may be used only between the two rings 18 on each side next adjacent to the arch portion 12. The joint is made by building up the different layers on a form, the rubber being there-after vulcanized. The rubber may be natural or synthetic rubber or blends thereof.
