[Also in Groups XVI and XVII] An object 12, resting on an area 14 of a card, is secured to the card by adhesive tape 17 which is applied by a mechanism comprising means for holding the tape parallel to the card, a reciprocating tape-applying plunger 52 above the area 14, two tape threading plungers 51, 51<SP>1</SP>, positioned to pass on each side of the area to points beneath the card, a movable anvil 56 beneath the area 14 to support the card, and reciprocating tape wiping fingers 60, 601, for sticking the tape to the back of the card. In the construction shown an oscillating arm 28 produces a loop 31 in the tape supplied from a reel 16, the free end of the tape being passed between holding means 23, 26, and resting by its adhesive surface on a pin 18. The extremity 20 is gripped by pivoted jaws 32, 33, on a gripper head 37 which then moves to the right to bring the tape over the object 12, and at this stage a plunger head 50 is moved downwards to bring the plunger 52 in contact with the object 12. A knife 57 is then moved to sever a length of tape and a shaft 46 moves to the left to open the jaws 32, 33. Further downward movement of the head 50 causes the plungers 51, 51<SP>1</SP>, to thread the tape through apertures 15, 151, on either side of the area 14. A shaft 61 carrying the anvil 56 is then lowered, such movement serving, by means of levers 65 and arms 67, to produce inward movements of the fingers 60, 60<SP>1</SP> for applying the tape to the back of the card. The cards used may vary; for instance a card may be very narrow, Fig. 8, (not shown), with the tape passing around opposite edges, or again the tape may pass through a slot and around an edge.
